Tips for Packing Your Home: Massachusetts Movers

Tips for Packing Your Home, from Conlon Moving & StoragePacking Your Home: Massachusetts Movers

Moving house can be a big ordeal, but it doesn’t have to be if you have a solid plan. Hire professional Massachusetts movers to take care of the heavy lifting, but save some money by deciding to pack up your belongings on your own. You can purchase packing supplies and services through your commercial moving company, which can really help a lot. You need to have the right supplies that will help protect your belongings, whether you move everything directly to your new location or if you take advantage of mobile storage in MA as a temporary solution. A lot of people think they can just throw everything into boxes with some packing peanuts and go on their way, but it is important to pack smart – not just pack to get the job done.

Tip #1 – Make a Special Folder
About 6-8 weeks in advance of your move, take some time to sit down and create a folder that will have everything in it that you will need for your move. Include the contract for the Massachusetts movers that you hire, along with lists that you make on what needs to be packed, vendor receipts, paperwork for your existing residence and your future residence, contact numbers for utility companies – everything that you will need between now and your moving day.

Tip #2 – Create a List (or Lists)
It is important to really sit down and think about what needs to be done. Create checklists with all the things that you need to do starting two months before the move, one month before the move, two weeks before the move, one week before the move, and on your moving day. Make a list of the rooms and spaces that need to be packed up so you won’t leave anything behind in an attic, shed or storage closet. Make a list of any odd-sized, really heavy or hard-to-move items and make sure to talk about them with the commercial moving company.

Tip #3 – Consider a Pre-Move
One way to make your moving day go a lot smoother is to start packing up things that you don’t need and won’t use between now and your moving day. Holiday decorations, snowsuits for the kids, that giant turkey platter you only use on Thanksgiving – all that stuff can be loaded up into mobile storage in MA and stored at a warehouse or stored on-site in your driveway or in front of your house until you are ready to move. If you are selling your home, consider moving out excess furniture so you can make your home appear larger to prospective buyers.

Tip #4 – Start Going Through Stuff
Even if you aren’t ready to start packing, start going through the things that you own to see what you need and don’t need. Throw stuff out – don’t pack it and take it to your new place. Donate anything that is still in good condition to a local charity or church. Sell things of value that you don’t want or don’t need. Use this move as an opportunity to get rid of some of the clutter in your life instead of just shuffling it from one address to the next.

Tip #5 – Make a Self-Move List
Even if you are having Massachusetts movers take care of the furniture and boxes in your home, there will still be things that you will want to move. Anything of value or things that are fragile, like your favorite aunt’s vintage lamp and that coin collection you’ve been working on since you were a kid. Ask about any specialty packing supplies and services that you might need from the commercial moving company. Get a list of things that cannot be transported in a professional moving truck, such as food items, pet items, cleaning products and anything that is flammable. If you want to keep those things and move them with you, make sure you pack them up and transport them in your personal vehicle along with you, your family members and any pets that you have.

Tip #6 – Mark Everything
When you start to pack up your things in preparation for moving day, make sure to mark each and every box. Be specific! Include the room that the box will go into, such as living room, kitchen, master bedroom or hall bathroom, and write on the top of the box what is inside. This will make it easier to locate the shower curtain and towels when you are ready for a hot shower at the end of your first night in the new place. If you have a lot of boxes, consider a numbering system and use a legal pad to record the box numbers along with the inventory inside. Still, write the room that the boxes are going to be moved into, but give yourself a way to check off the boxes as they are unloaded to make sure nothing is missing.
